Now CEO AND President of Emma Bowen Foundation. At the time Nikki Bethel was SVP of Talent Management at HBO, and when I sat down with Nikki we became Sistafriends that day. She is so wonderful.
Our conversation moved us to tears, had us laughing and sharing such beautiful moments. Less of me interviewing, more of two women sharing a moment.

Thank you for listening to She’s Got Drive. Today we have the last in out Black Mama series of interviews with midwife Tanya Khemet and Academic Keisha Goode, both President and Vice President of National Association of Certified Professional Midwives. We talk about the racism faced by Black midwives, the decimation of Black midwifery, and the need to address the structural barriers for Black Midwives today. And how Black Midwives is an answer to the Black Maternal Health crisis. My name is Shirley McAlpine. Welcome to She's Got Drive.
So grab your cup of tea, or drink of choice and you might want to take a walk as you listen to these two amazing and inspiring women.
Dr Tanya Khemet Taiwo considers herself blessed to be the mother of three beautiful girls who were all born into the hands of midwives. After serving as clinic administrator and staff midwife of The Birthing Project Clinic for eight years, she became one of the founding mothers of Birth and Family Health Center, women’s health clinics housed in community health centers located in medically underserved areas of Sacramento. She currently works in a Federally Qualified Health Center, continuing to care for low-income families in a multi-disciplinary setting. She comes from a family tradition of midwives. She joined the NACPM Board of Directors in the fall of 2012, and has been President for 4 years. Dr. Khemet Taiwo is an assistant professor of midwifery at Bastyr University, and a research Fellow at The
Birth Place Lab at the University of British Columbia. At the Birth Place Lab she’s collaborating on the Giving Voice to Mothers Study, a research project that examines how race, ethnicity and birthplace affect maternity care in the United States. Her dissertation research in epidemiology examined how prenatal socioeconomic and psychological stress impacted child neurodevelopment, and how these stressors are amplified by environmental exposures.
Dr Keisha Goode joined the Board as the first appointed Public Member. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at The State University of New York College. Her primary research area is Medical Sociology with specific attention to the medicalization of childbirth and the historical and contemporary complexities of Black midwifery in the United States. She is completing a book proposal for the publication of her dissertation research, Birthing, Blackness and The Body: Black Midwives and Experiential Continuities of Institutional Racism.

Today we have an important episode with Jennie Joseph and Mars Lord. Its the first time I have had two women in the guest chair. We discuss female maternal health and Black and Brown Community. We are in crisis. In our conversation we talk about what is going on and what is needed.
So grab your cup of tea, or drink of choice and you might want to take a walk as you listen to these two amazing and inspiring women.
JENNIE JOSEPH is one of the most well-known and respected midwives and advocates worldwide for family-centered healthcare. She is widely accepted as a hero in birthing circles because of the positive outcomes she has seen through her simple yet profoundly successful model of prenatal care known as The JJ Way®. Joseph is a British-trained midwife who moved to the United States in 1989 and has worked as an independent midwife in Florida since then. The JJ Way® is a midwifery model of care that simplifies prenatal care, removing barriers to care in a medical system which is known for having many hoops to jump through.
MARS LORD: Award winning doula and birth activist Mars Lord has been a birth keeper for well over a decade. She has had the privilege of working with hundreds of families. A birth activist, with a desire to see the ‘colouring in of the landscape of birth’ and finding out the reasons for the maternal and neonatal morbidity rates amongst the BAME community, Mars created Abuela Doulas a doula preparation course primarily, but not exclusively, for women of colour. Her desire for reproductive justice led to the creation of the ‘Reproductive Justice Retreat’. Mars was recently recognised in the Mayor of London's Hidden Credits campaign and continues to speak out for cultural safety and reproductive justice.

Saturday Apr 17, 2021
Saturday Apr 17, 2021
For Black Mothers and Mothers of Black and Brown babies/children. This week as we acknowledge Black Women's Health week I am reposting Jennie Joseph.
Get your cup of tea , or go for a walk and listen to this weeks episode of She's Got Drive.
Jennie Joseph, CEO of Commonsense Childbirth based in Florida, has worked tirelessly through her The JJ Way™ method to educate, empowerment and support women to have healthy pregnancies and babies.
America has the highest maternal mortality rate of any industrialized country in the world. More than two women die every day in the USA from pregnancy-related causes, and 3 to 4 times as many Black women as White are at-risk or die during pregnancy. We have read and heard of Serena Williams experience and the challenge that Beyonce has - the issues for Black women cross socio economic boundaries - it is real and we all need to know what is happening. Raising awareness about this preventable issue gives a platform to Black women to share their experiences, and educates and empowers communities to push for change.
Jennie is a national speaker, motivator, and author. She has been featured in documentaries about this important issue, has hosted her own radio talk show and is a regular guest on other shows. I...
In this episode
- Hear her thoughts on what success means to her and her personal journey.
- and how her success was more organic , verses being planned, through the challenge of transitioning as a midwife from the UK to the US.
- Jennie shares how she could not ignore the calling to work on behalf of underserved women and babies and the terrible maternal health outcomes in the US, that are often unknown and the impact on black women and families.
- How her personal painful experience lead her to start her journey as an entrepreneur and lessons learned.

Episode 116: Renae Bluitt on Black Women and their Pathway to Freedom
Friday Apr 02, 2021
Friday Apr 02, 2021
YES we are back with my first interview of this return season - Renae Bluitt. remember when Issa Rae said " I'm rooting for everybody Black" - well this is Renae but add Black women. She really is a stand for Black women living and being their best selves. We had a fantastic conversation when I sat down with her last summer.
Renae L. Bluitt is a Brooklyn, New York-based filmmaker, digital content creator, and branding expert who serves as an advocate for Black women’s accurate representation in the media. With over a decade of experience, Renae has gained valuable insight into Black women entrepreneur’s narratives — a passion that she recently channeled into her first film as Creator and Executive Producer of the documentary, “She Did That.” which premiered at the ESSENCE Music Festival and is currently streaming on Netflix in the U.S., Canada, UK/Ireland, Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. The film, which offers an up close and personal look at Black women entrepreneurs, addresses topics like the funding gap for women of color.
